Summary/Abstract: The theory of an Old European layer of hydronyms in Europe with a significant center in the Baltic countries was constructed by Hans Krahe and modified by Wolfgang P. Schmid. Time after time, it has been criticized, to some extent even intensely. Lately, it has also been approached by scholars from the Indo-European field. The reconstructions of hydronyms have been declared archaic, especially from the point of view of the laryngeal theory. This article takes up the criticism and discusses it.
