Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the most signifiant of Svetozar Ćorović’s novels and short stories, with the aim to examine events, phenomena, characters and motifs which are related in some way to Istanbul and Vienna: two large centers, crucial for forming identity and the feeling of otherness in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As imperial cores, Istanbul and Vienna are not treated as cities, but as cultural and civilizational centers of power, for which Bosnia was always perceived as the colonized other. In this respect, the works of a Mostar writer (seen as coming from the margins of this power) is interesting, in that he is not able to identify with either of these two centers. This paper considers literary-historical, ideological and cultural questions, raised by the Orient and Europe during their encounter in Bosnia.
