Summary/Abstract: The article focusses on the image of the Moscow Underground in the contemporary Polish reportage. The main interest concentrates however not on the utilitarian aspect of the Metro, but on its history and propagandist significance of the individual stations. While the author argues that the Underground was built for political-prestige reasons, she displays how it both creates and depicts its own „underground mythology,” which fits into urban folklore. The paper discusses a variety of notions, which create specific, individual characteristic of the Moscow Underground and claims that its realm can be perceived as an underground city.
