Summary/Abstract: Vincas Daukšys’ Raistas (1908) is one of the first translations of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle (1906) into Lithuanian. The analysis of the translation shows that Daukšys omitted quite a large amount of the original text. The number of omissions in Raistas is erratic: in the first part of the translation (I–XVI chapters) Daukšys skips most of the original text; in the second part (starting with chapters XVI –XVII ) there are fewer omissions. The last four chapters (XXVIII –XXXI), which are devoted heavily to socialist ideas, were translated carefully following the original source. One might presume that these omissions could be related to the ideological beliefs of the translator himself. In the first chapter where Sinclair pays most attention to Lithuanian realia, the translator skips the major part of the literary tropes that concern the Lithuanian protagonists. By omitting the author’s irony, evaluation, and comments Daukšys could distort their image. This could also be important for the publisher of the translation―Jonas Naujokas in order to make the protagonists appear nicer to Lithuanian readers and thereby to increase sales of the book. The analysis of Raistas shows Daukšys’ attempts to follow the changing norms of standard Lithuanian. Probably he did not reread his translation, for there are two obvious places where he changes the common usage of words and orthography. The first attempt is made after chapter IX. Here Daukšys starts to use yet another word kambarys; it is used interchangeably as a synonym for the previously used word ruimas. He begins to use the word skerdykla instead of skerdinyčia, changes the orthography of the word savaitė, as well as the usage of the dash. Starting with chapter XVIII the orthography of nouns and numerals ending with “‑įs” changes into “‑ys.”
