Summary/Abstract: In his article I explain why 3‐D technology was not adopted by film industry, despite several 3‐D revolutions and many costly attempts to popularize stereoscopic technology in the mainstream cinema. I focus on four groups of arguments, relating to the (1) film industry and film exhibition, (2) screenplays and plots of popular 3‐D films, (3) the motivation of the 3‐D technology, and (4) psychological effect of 3‐D cinema, arguing that the 3‐D effect can be achieved by simpler procedures than projection with polaroid glasses or sophisticated screens. Finally, I try to prove that the supporters of the 3‐D revolution were fighting for something that traditional cinema never lacked.
