Summary/Abstract: The current attempts to attract the opera audience lead to the radical transformation of this form. They deprive it of the sublime, high art aura and break the barrier of the art for upper classes. In order to simplify the reception, opera theatres display dialogue translations or perform in the language of the audience, what violates the music sphere of the work. This time less works of art are also deprived of the original settings to fit to the modern times and to win the contemporary audience. In the result, there is a shocking, modern stage design, which is closer to the mass entertainment than to the high art. The only thing that remains from the original work is the music, which also undergoes some shortening and transformations, such as the addition of the folklore music. The last element of the opera popularization is the commercialization through the audiovisual recordings. This kind of reproduction creates an unlimited audience and brings the opera out of the privileged place called “the temple of art”. The effect of all these practices is an accessible opera form for everybody.
