Summary/Abstract: In 1582, Livonia and Transylvania had a common emperor – István Báthory, a defender of the Catholic faith. At that time, the Reformation initiated in Germany had already gained a strong foothold on the shores of the Baltic sea. Through a brief historical overview of the history of church and society in the three Baltic states, the article strives to offer different perspectives to the notion of freedom: freedom of faith, freedom of the individual believer, the freedom of a nation, and the responsibility of those living in freedom.
