Summary/Abstract: During the mass songs are an integral part of the liturgy. They should not be treated merely as an ornament or embellishment, selected at one’s own discretion. In the liturgy there is no place for ordinary religious songs. The selection of songs should not be guided by the individual tastes of the participants of the liturgy, including both priests as well as e.g. animators. That is because liturgical songs are legitimate ways of worshiping God and of sanctifying the faithful, and are regulated by the Church. This also applies to songs for children. In their selection, we should be guided by the song books approved by the diocesan bishop, the musical and intellectual capacities of the children, but also the educational purposes, shaping the children for mature participation in the liturgy together with the entire community of the Church. The liturgy should not be infantilized or trivialized, or profaned by the incorporation of songs. The liturgy has its dignity, sacredness, which should be respected also through the use of an appropriate repertoire.
