Summary/Abstract: The article indicates the problem of sublime in the philosophy of Kant as a discoveryof an ability of man to take the external position against nature (on the basis of aestheticinsight), which leads to instrumental attitude to nature (by positioning of subjectbeyond or above it). This perspective on human condition focuses on the interestsin teleological activity of subject in Hegelian and Marxian philosophy. Hegel uses thenotion of cunning of reason to describe ontology of technology, Marx expresses bothadmiration and horror in the confrontation with industrial machines, which showsthe ambivalent attitude to the technological progress. The sublime opens the sphereof technological artifacts for an aesthetical analysis (Mirzoeff) and becomes the corecategory for an avant-garde (Lyotard).
