Art and Emotions. Towards a Dynamic and Situational Approach to Aesthetic Emotions

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to propose a dynamic and situational approach to aestheticemotions. At the starting point I compare the nature and functions of aesthetic emotions and basic emotions. Then I distinguish three areas of behavioral and cognitiveactivity of the recipient of art, and I assign to them the three types of emotions, i.e.embodied emotions, epistemic emotions, and contextual and emotive emotions. Next,I propose a metaphorical model illustrating how aesthetic emotions emerge dynamicallywithin the emotional cascade. At the end of the article, I focus on the situationalconditions in which a full emotional aesthetical experience can emerge.
