Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the existing EU legal framework on legal services, from the point of view of freedom of establishment and competition law, with a reference to the peculiar case of Italy regarding in particular the implementation in that Member State of directive 98/5 on freedom of establishment of lawyers. The Italian market of legal services and its compatibility with the new requirements of the European Commission are evaluated, taking into consideration the risk of abuse in the recognition of foreign professional qualification and the regulation of joint practices. In the final part the focus is on the “Reform Recommendations for Regulation in Professional Services” recently presented by the European Commission and its eventual consequences for the legal profession in Italy.
