Naming God in Ukrainian folklore songs

Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the analysis of naming of the higher Divine Power. The lexeme ‚Бог‘ (God) belongs to the majority of these nominations that is part of most widely used sacral onyms of the Ukrainian folklore songs. The research proves the claims of those scholars who believe that the theonym ‚Бог‘ (God) is pre-Christian by its origin. It is most often used as part of fixed phrases, interjectory idioms with address for help, care, defense, where the signifier correlates with the etymon of the proper name: petitioner.
