Summary/Abstract: Compared to the European tradition, there is no official name list in China, which is the reason why Chinese given names show a high degree of diversity. Another important difference is the unique writing system used to record the Chinese language. The question that arises is how specific features of the writing system used affect the choice of given names. One cannot overlook the fact that, although there is a range of factors usually considered, in the end it is the Chinese character with its meaning and other qualities that is chosen. The aim of this paper is to examine and identify which of these qualities are used as distinctive features in male and female names. Based on a sample of Chinese Olympic team members, the grammatological characteristics of contemporary Chinese given names are described.
