Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the strategy used by Hungarian kings from the late 13th–early 14th century against the oligarchy which started to act as an independent political factor. During the time of the last Arpadians, the royalty tried to come to an arrangement with the oligarchs, but sometimes military actions came to the fore, with less success. At the beginning even Charles I tried the same strategy, but in 1314 he decided to militarily eliminate of the oligarchy. The study presents the circumstances which turned his undertaking into a success. The most important cause was that the oligarchs couldn’t expect military aid neither from abroad, nor from each other; in the meantime Charles succeeded to turn the majority of the nobles against them.
