Summary/Abstract: The paper aims at analysing the determinants of regional economic integration in Sub-Saharan Africain relation to the European model of integration, perceived as a benchmark for the region. The paper employs analytic-descriptive analysis, using national and international literature sources andstatistical data of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development – UNCTAD. Research results show that regional integration processes in Africa are determined by natural conditions, economic and political determinants, as well as by adopted model of integration. As integration effectsin Africa prove to be highly unsatisfactory, a critical review of adopted integration model seems tobe necessary. International institutions should also verify their approach to African integration inorder to provide this continent with an optimal balance between local regionalism and economicglobalization.
