Summary/Abstract: Although the modernization of villages in terms of infrastructural investment and the application of machinery and spread of technology had a significant effect on improving the quality of life and work in rural areas, however, there has not been prosperous development and sustainability of the villages in the former Yugoslavia. The village is fundamentally and structurally transformed and no longer represents the autarkic community based on traditional patterns of behavior and activity. Rural household in a market-oriented economy grew in to the farm, and the grower becomes a farmer. Within rural communities there are changes in social relationships, and physical work is not an essential factor in the sustainability of the village. The paper further analyzes how today's village can survive in the conditions of non-competitive agricultural production, insufficient or inadequate measures of economic-agrarian policy and in terms of the mass exodus of the population from rural areas. Have the historical preconditions led to the death of the villages in the former Yugoslavia? The challenges faced by today's villages mainly range from protection of domestic production and increase in production potential on the one hand, and the liberalization of markets and free trade on the other.
