Summary/Abstract: The southern Mesopotamia where the Sumerians live is the swamp and reed area. Trees and stones used in making weapon have rarely seen in this region. Because of lack of stone and lumber, the Sumerians firstly began to build fortification walls by using clay and cane which were abundant in the region. Fortification walls were built thick and high so that they could not be easily climbed and damaged to cities. The Sumerian city-states had taken a number of measures to preserve their richness as they got wealth. Furthermore, dating from the Early Dynastic Period, the competition between city-states had laid the foundation for the development of a military presence. Due to the increasing security problems in the cities, a military union was established that wore uniforms and dressed of the same color and carried similar weapons. In this period, the political structures with armament had come to forward, apart from the religious authority. The Sumerian army consisted of infantry and battleships.
