Summary/Abstract: The signs are mounting that the leading circles of Hungary have come to realize that society is develop-ing in a manner deviating from Marxist expectations. It has long been suspected that the generation that was coined in the pre-socialist era produces individuals only in exceptional cases, whose attitude corresponds to the ideal expectations of the doctrinaire leaders of the system. Whether the appear-ance of a "new man" in his total perfection was ever seriously expected is doubtful. But one did be-lieve in the emergence of a new type acting out of conviction and well-intentioned self-interest, whose "values" should have come close to the postulates of the theory.
