Summary/Abstract: The article describes the events of the Russo-Turkish war of 1828–1829 and their interpretation in the letters, journals and memories by the officers of the Russian army. The motives, the core of the war, the course of military operations on the Balkans are represented through the perception of the participants of these events. Special attention is paid to important moments of the Russo-Turkish war such as the crossing of the Danube, the siege and capture of Varna, the marching on Braila and Silistria, the siege of Shoumla, the crossing of the Balkans, the capitulation of Adrianopole and the conclusion the Adrianopolis peace. The authors pay attention not only to purely military aspects, such as the description of the military operations, defeats and victories, but also to the scenes from the military life, to the morals and customs of the local inhabitants and their attitude to the Russian army. The main idea in all sources is the necessity for liberation of the Balkan Peninsula from the Turkish yoke. The conclusion of the Adrianopolis treaty is a victory according to the Russian officers and a first step to the future liberation of the Balkan lands.
