Summary/Abstract: The dance is discussed in the article not as an independent sphere but as a part of human movement culture. The starting opinion is that from ethnological point of view the investigation of the dance as piece of art is only one aspect. The analysis of the movement motifs not only with respect to their structure but with respect to their semantics comes to be the task of ethnological investigation. Two are the types of movement motifs thus analyzed. They characterize female and male solo performance in the wedding ritual dance rachenitsa. Along the individual body in the solo dance, we can also speak about a joint body in chain and circle dances from the Bulgarian dance tradition. In the case the hold, the way the dancers hold each other in the chain is interpreted as a movement unit bearing a meaning. The principal of uninterruptedness of the dance chain as an embodiment of the notion about the living body is brought out. The semantic analysis of the movement motifs is based on the concept of Laban about analysis and description of human movement. The discrepancies between the limits set to the dance movement by the physical abilities of the body and tend to overcome them by the dance are commented at the end.
