Summary/Abstract: The paper connects the contemporary investigations of modern and postmodern drama with several theories of individual and collective memory in an analysis of various verbal and nonverbal discourses of memory theatre and its “reversed“ temporality. Focused on the visual rhetoric of memory plays, the paper finds paradigmatic examples of the representations of individual and collective memory in Beckett’s and Bernhard’s plays, as well as in the dramatic works of other (post)modern playwrights. The theoretical framework is provided by a comparative reading of Sarrazac’s and Malkin’s investigations of theatre, Richardson’s and Cohn’s narratological studies, and philosophical works by Halbwachs, Assmann, Nora, Ricoeur,Todorov, and other notable contemporary thinkers.
