Summary/Abstract: In this study, we examine how firm characteristics, knowledge endowmentsand constraints affect the innovation performance of industrial firms. We have distinguishedfirms according to their degree of commitment to innovation activity, in order to observe thesensitivity of the innovation function to different determinants and constraints. Theestimation of different models (Tobit, truncated, Boostrap) provides strong evidence of theimportance of intrinsic business characteristics and knowledge endowment for the group ofinnovative firms. These are due to a selective recruitment (high rate of supervision), and totraining and consulting cycles. However, their innovation activity is penalized by a set ofconstraints. For the group of non-innovative companies, the endowments of knowledge arenot likely to affect their activity. Similarly, they do not seem to be upset by the constraints. Thus, incentive policies for training and recruitment should be implemented according to thedegree of corporate commitment to innovation.
