Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the relationship of church authorities of the Early Christian period towards music, accentuating the polemics developed in the patristic literature towards music practice of the so-called pagan world, especially towards the instruments usage. The reasons of the antagonistic relationship are to be clarified through the attitudes of leading Christian thinkers, by observing their implications in the creation of early Christian music practice. It resulted in developing a specific style of Gregorian singing and the beginning of interest in music theory.
