Summary/Abstract: A centuries-old tradition connected with the recitation (chant) of the Breviarum Romanum has transmitted that every Psalm has (usually) its own antiphon, which proceedes and follows the Psalm itself. The responsory forms a response for the biblical, patristic or hagiographic reading. The revision of those texts has been entrusted to the Study-Group VII (De cantibus Officii). The criteria of the new redaction were as follows: to emphasize a literary genre of a Psalm, to strengthen the spirit of prayer and contemplation, to consider the liturgical character of a day, to increase diversity in the office, to underline the main idea of a Psalm, to show the Psalm in the light of Christ and of the Gospel, to introduce to the economy of the New Testament. In turn, during the redaction of responsories the criteria were as follows: to help to understand the readings, a change of the lecture into the prayer and contemplation, pointing on the actual moment of the history of salvation, etc. Moreover the responsories after the patristic readings are based on the biblical texts, including also the psalmodic. The hagiographical readings are followed by responsories reffering to the commune sanctorum or to the liturgical season.
