The Holy Family as an Example of Life for the Christian Families. The Theological and Liturgical Analysis of the Euchological Texts of the Mass of the Holy Family Feast

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the richness of the theological and existential contents of the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, which is celebrated within the Octave of the Nativity of the Lord. The prayers and Antiphons taken from the Mass of the Holy Family are the primary sources for revealing the theology of the feast. The theological and liturgical analysis of the liturgical texts that has been done allows a deepening of the understanding and experience of the Feast of the Holy Family, seeing them in the context of the whole history of salvation. The events described in the Holy Scriptures are the first source for the contents of all the prayers. One can find in them an existential experience of family life. Thanks to this, the liturgical texts repeatedly show the situation of human beings who are not participating in the liturgy only, but are also living in the world. Jesus came into the world in a human family, in this way he emphasised its dignity and greatness. The poverty of Jesus’ birth and of his parents, and the sacrifices which they had to bear since the birth of the Son of God took place, shows that He came as Saviour of all people. Joseph and Mary were chosen by God to create a real family for Jesus. That Family through their love, faith and fidelity to the religious and national traditions became a model for all Christian families. The imitation of the virtues of the Holy Family leads to eternal life in the Fathers’ house.
