Summary/Abstract: The paper takes a closer look at the semantics of the Russian two-place connective raz… to [if; once; since]. This connective is commonly thought to be a mere variant of the conjunction raz, with the same meanings assigned to it. We attempt to show that the main difference between the two connectives lies in the semantic charge of the element to as it serves to emphasize the implicative relation conveyed by raz. To that end, we employ a contrastive approach and use data from Russian and French. For this pair of languages, raz… to is found to be language-specific.
