In the early 20s Markham and his family settled in Bulgaria for good. From June 1921 to the end of 1922 he was the proprietor and editor-in-chief of the periodical “Seme”, after that he began to publish the periodical “Polet”, attracting as contributors established names in Bulgarian journalism. The subject-matter of his articles was of an entirely secular character and covered practically all fields of social life in Bulgaria - economics, politics, culture, education of the young, etc. In 1926-1926 he published the newspaper “Svyat” by which he finally consolidated as a friend and defender of the Bulgarian people and their ideals, as a partisan for overcoming the internal political and social conflicts, for rapid cultural and social prosperity of the country. From 1928 he was official correspondent of the American newspaper .Christian Science Monitor. for Bulgaria and the Balkans and from 1932 also for Central Europe. Besides his articles, he became particularly popular by his book “Meet Bulgaria”, published in Sofia in 1931, which the Bulgarian diplomatic representatives abroad readily used for propaganda purposes. The Second World War cut Markham’s direct links with Bulgaria, but after 1944 he continued to visit this country as a journalist on every suitable occasion. Until his death in 1949 he remained her staunch friend and defender.
