Practicing Leisure Under the Conditions of Time Scarcity and Time Abundance

Summary/Abstract: Due to the profound changes in the daily temporal structures that have taken place in Polish society since the 1990s, everyday life of a large number of its members takes the form of time scarcity or time abundance. For many people living in these new temporal conditions, which are associated with, on the one hand, a chronic lack of time, and on the other hand with an overwhelming weight of its excess, practicing so-called “free” time becomes a challenge. The article examines the problematic status of leisure, drawing on the experiences of people living under the conditions of time scarcity and time abundance. The main part of the article presents an empirical reconstruction of social practices related to the domain of free time in a situation of its shortage and excess. It is preceded by a description of the general characteristics of the new temporal conditions which call into question the notion of free time as an obvious attribute of everyday life.
