Summary/Abstract: The principle of lex voluntatis, as a conflict rule, authorizes the parties to appoint the law applicable to the international contract. Currently, the principle of lex voluntatis is the widest and the most recognized conflict rule of law, enshrined in one form or another in all national systems of private international law, but also in international conventions. The principle of lex voluntatis did not appear spontaneously; on the contrary, it has a particular historical development and the contemporary full understanding of the concept involves taking into account these developments. The emergence and evolution of the lex voluntatis principle deeply marks the essence of private international law (contract law, at least), the aim of this paper being precisely to present the evolution stages of this concept.
