Summary/Abstract: This study is based on a case from a leading Polish technical university in which a Master of Science dissertation was plagiarised by its supervisor and the reviewer in a subsequent scientific publication. The plagiarists not only stole the data, results and creative components from the author of the thesis but also purposely omitted the owner of this intellectual property from the authors’ list. This paper presents fundamental problems resulting from appropriation of data, results and creative components from academic publications that are protected by copyright. The issues discussed include detrimental consequences of spuriously adding academic theses’ supervisors as authors of publications which are extensively derived from these theses. Various forms of joint authorships are also discussed.
