Limitation of access to public domain books in the digital environment

Summary/Abstract: In 2012 in New Zealand research in the limitation of access to digitized versions of printed books whose copyright expired was conducted. Research demonstrated that the organizers of digital repositories and libraries are not always aware of the legal status of the works which are included into the collections and they introduce various limitations in the access to these items. These are both technical and legal limitations. The results that were obtained became a stimulus to conduct similar research in reference to Polish public domain books and to seek an answer to the question about whether Polish public domain books are also subject to limitation of use in the case such books are placed in the digital environment. The article presents the methodological premises and an in-depth account of the results of theresearch which was conducted.
