Aging and Social Care Services to Older People in the Romanian Context

Summary/Abstract: Romania, as a member state of the EU, aligns to the tendency of population ageing, a tendency existing at the international level. After the age of 70 we are talking about a poly-pathology of the elderly, who are confronted with a series of chronic diseases. Also, social security costs and social services will also increase for that vulnerable category of single people, surviving spouse. An important role in this elder care approach is not only for families but also for governmental authorities or the non-governmental sector. All social actors have to take part and concentrate their efforts in order to ease and improve the mechanism of maintaining the elderly in his family, by developing and creating social-medical home care. In order to grasp the issue of the quality of the elderly adult’s life we used to a secondary analysis of data. This study is based on the analysis of statistical data but also upon data resulting from different sociological studies made on a national (in Romania) and European level. For improving the quality of the elderly adult’s life for this segment of population, which is in a continuous increase, the social policies should foresee the development of complex programs for psycho-social-medical home (when health allows) prided by private and public suppliers.
