Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Legend Theatre’s 2005 jingju adaptation of Waiting for Godot displaces Beckett’s metaphysical background with Chan Buddhism. Referring to Chan Buddhist philosophy, history of chou in China, and comic theory, this article evaluates CLT’s adaptation strategies and see how they reshaped our understanding of the role type chou and the meaning of the original play.
