Summary/Abstract: Meteorological terms that designate the deposits in the Romanian language represent a small lexical category (approximately 130 lexemes – about 10% of the volume of DFA articles), but raise interesting problems from a meteorological as well as a linguistic point of view. The deposits can be sub-classified according to the surface on which they occur, because the deposits can be: on the surface of the ground or on the objects that stay on it, according to existing definitions (brumă ‘hoar-frost’, chiciură ‘rime’, rouă ‘dew’, polei ‘glazed frost’, ţurţur ‘icicles’, zăpadă ‘snow’, etc.) ; but also on the objects in the air (givraj ‘icing’), or on the water (gheaţă ‘ice’, etc.). This is an issue that has not been taken into consideration yet. The deposits can also be sub-classified in: a) actual deposits (brumă ‘hoar-frost’, polei ‘glazed frost’, etc.); b) accumulations (avalanşă ‘avalanche’); c) processes (a bruma ‘to rime’, a rouá ‘to freeze’, etc.). With regard to their etymology, most of the lexemes are derived with suffixes in the common and popular language, whereas in the scientific area the majority of these lexemes are neologisms.
