Summary/Abstract: During the period of the British rule in India the colonists constructed mechanical and asymmetrical model of communication between them and the colonised. The transmission of the cultural concepts was selective, almost entirely one-sided; it was also characterized by the profound axiological deficit. Using this communication strategy the British colo-nists imposed on the local population their model of administration and jurisdiction, profoundly imitative modes of production, historical periodization, etc. Consequently, this specific colonial policy initiated tradition of cultural simplification and stereotypes that have never ceased. The objectives of this article are: 1) to present the evolution of the colonial narratives regarding India as a way to build the knowledge about the country but also to create the asymmetrical model of communication between the colonists and the colonised; 2) to outline the Gandhian philosophy and contribution to the Indian freedom movement and to present it as an attempt to break the one-sided model of the colonial communication; 3) to show relation of continuity between the colonial narratives and Indian postcolonial auto-narrations.
