Summary/Abstract: Video games are interpreted as an audiovisual media which could fit an artistic expression and interpretation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Uniqueness of the media is expressed in the creative freedom of the author and possibility of the player to independently participate in the shaping of the work (game). Experience of the player is determined by his own choices and personal preferences made throughout the game, making the player a co-creator of the work. Video games are created in a way that allows every player to have a unique experience by upgrading the game play itself while taking part in it. The emergence of the media has lead to creation of a subculture formed by video games. A possibility of mutual interaction among the formed community has also enabled the players to explore and interpret the game from their own perspective, encoding and developing the game lore, hence creating a particular kind of heritage. The past in video games can either be visualized through a realistic representation of a particular historical epoch or it could be manipulated in terms of its modernization, modification of historical events, creation of alternative timelines, or extraction of certain social and cultural elements and phenomena used for constituting an unique and fictional world. In addition, the authors and video game creators can interpret the past from their own perspective. By implementing rich cultural content in the video games, the identity of time and space in the game is set, as well as the identity of the fictional society which the player is part of, as he steps into the virtual world during each round. By perceiving the past in this particular manner, video games become suitable for active experiencing of a particular cultural heritage, as well as for creation of individual intangible heritage. Interactivity and high level of social penetration has enabled video games to become a media that can significantly popularize any cultural heritage.
