Summary/Abstract: After the Spanish Constitutional Court decision on the constitutionality of the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia, the officials of this autonomous community have expressed intention to organize a referendum with regards to its independence. According to the ruling of the Spanish Constitutional Court, Catalonia had overstepped the limits of its autonomous jurisdiction in the new Statute. The decision of the Constitutional Court on the constitutionality of several provisions of the Statute have provoked negative reactions of both the general public and the constitutional experts of Catalonia, and resulted in constitutional and political crisis in Spain. This paper is devoted to the analysis of the aforesaid decision of the Constitutional Court of Spain, examination of its legal and political consequences, and assessment of the likelihood of preventing the scenario of unilateral secession.
