Summary/Abstract: Despite its unhappy and tragic end, Derviš Sušić’s novel Čudnovato is a novel with extremely humanist understanding of life and, in particular, a novel that clearly suggests a number of intercultural values. Namely, through the love story of its main characters – Sulejman Viteškić (Bosniak) and Ružica Radovanova (Serb), the novel Čudnovato refers to cultural diversity and problems that it necessarily entails, without fake mitigation or any other socially presumed mimicry. At the same time, the novel emphasizes the importance of the idea of interculturalism in general, especially in terms of developing intercultural communication, intercultural competence and, finally, intercultural practice. Namely, although tragically observed and unrealized, cultural diversity in the novel Čudnovato is partly accepted since all acts of ignoring it are represented as what leads necessarily to the tragic end of the main characters of the novel. Exactly in that tragic way, Derviš Sušić’s novel Čudnovato affirms and favors social adaptation towards intercultural plurality, promoting on the basis of negative examples interculturality as a positive value. That is why Sušić’s image of Bosnia in his last novel is formidable and painful, as is the case elsewhere in the literary opus of this author, but also and at the same time this is an appeal for the construction of a different, better world, or at least dream about it.
