Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the issues of origin and development of the theory of sustainable development in the historical context. It is pointed out that the foundations of the theory of sustainable development are to be found already in the work of the Greek thinker Aristotle in the 4th century B.C., and later in the works of many theoreticians of development relying on general insights. It is underlined that the explanation of phenomena and processes in nature ranges from the understanding of nature as an automatism in which everything develops according to the natural laws, from relying on the physical laws of machanics and thermodynamics to the present explanation with the dominance of the influence of biological laws and principles on the natural phenomena and processes and with the systematic approach to the management of environment.
