TRANSLATING THE UNTRANSLATABLE : ARE TVRĐAVA AND THE FORTRESS “A MOUSE OR A RAT”?

Summary/Abstract: Umberto Eco has said that a good translation is equally a critical contribution to understanding the translated work. Translation is always preceded by interpretation, and the result of this process inevitably indicates a particular type of reading of a particular text, same as literary criticism does. If a translator focuses on particular levels of text, he or she automatically places it in the focus of the reader. In that, different translations of one and the same text are indeed complementary, since they lead the writer towards understanding the source text from different vantage points. There is only one translation of The Fortress by Meša Selimović. with no intention to judge its quality, for it is certainly an admirable translation effort, this paper will focus on just a few key places in the novel itself and look at different aspects of translation. It will consider issues of equivalence at lexical and syntactic levels, as well as the very important issue of interpretation and its place in the translation process.
