Summary/Abstract: The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, it was absolutely necessary to write about János Arany’s comprehension of rhetoric, emphasizing that it was similar to the views of theories written by writers in the second half of the 20th century, e. g. Chaïm Perelmanin. It is important to concisely characterize authentic rhetoric because several misunderstandings exist about it in public opnion. The second part gives a brief description of Arany’s conception of humour, and quotes instances of his humour of argumentation, namely, of rhetorical example, the enthymeme, and also gives examples for topical logic: definition, genus-species relation and whole-part relation, causeeffect relation, and dilemma. Tropes and schemes in the writer’s view are connected to topical logic. Finally, attention is drawn to the problem of the way Arany is taught in high school: his poetry is simplified and one-sided, his humorous poems are left out, therefore, changes are required.
