Summary/Abstract: The paper presents unpublished evidence from the lower layers of the rock shelter of Duruitoarea Veche, the Prut river basin, Moldova. The site was discovered by N. A. Chetraru and excavated by him in 1958—1960, 1965 and 1973 (with the author’s participation). The available paleozoological data (especially the presence of teeth of Mammuthus intermedius = chosaricum) and palynological (pollen of Tertiary relics that disappeared at the end of the Last Interglacial) provide a solid basis for some chronological inferences. The lowemost layers, containing stone industries similar to that of the Tayacian technocomplex of Western Europe, can be dated to the beginning of the Riss period (OIS 8—7).
