Summary/Abstract: The authors publish two unique Byzantine glazed bowls of Constantinople production. One of them shows a Western European knight’s family coat-of-arms, the other — a war vessel with flags of the Republic of Genoa. Both bowls are dated by the second half of the 14th century. Symbols of power in the countries of Europe in the Middle Ages were placed on flags, textiles, jewelry and embedded plates. In this case, they decorated mass production — glazed pottery. These findings on the territory of the Northern Black Sea Region suggest a new view on interactions between the Western and Eastern cultures: it seems that Byzantine metropolitan masters were commissioned by the Italians to manufacture bowls with Latin power symbols on them.
