Summary/Abstract: Tradition of the settling of the Serbs in the Balkans, as set out by Constantine Porphyrogenitus, is mainly supported by archaeological evidence. The author examines relocation of Slavic groups from the territory of Banat and the neighboring areas to Southern Illyria and then Dalmatia, as well as evidence of cooperation between the Slavs and Byzantium. However, the Slavs appeared on the right bank of the Danube region of Serbia and in several cities in North Illyria no later than 580s, аnd in Dalmatia in the 5th — 6th centuries. It also examines the relationship between the Slavic culture and natives of Northern Illyria and Dalmatia.
