Summary/Abstract: The privatisation policy usually has been legitimized by the goals of macroeconomic efficiency achievements. It is often argued that the privatisation policy has been contributing to high rates of growth and the acceleration of development of a national economy. However, the mushrooming of economy and social problems in transition societies where the privatisation policy has been pursued, raises the issue of the actual goals of the privatisation policy and motives for conducting it. The aim of this article is to explore the purposes of the privatisation policy in Europe in different historical periods. It deals with the ideological and political roots of the transposition of socially owned means of production and property to private ownership. More precisely, the paper explores the relationship between the privatization policy and the class relations in a society.
