Summary/Abstract: Resocialisation through social participation and social work seem to be the most effective forms of helping people with a criminal record. The sheer volume of tasks which probation officers are faced with force them to cooperate with numerous institutions within the local community. In addition, the challenging and complex social situations of people during a trial period means social workers will naturally become their closest partners in cooperation. On the one hand different areas of work and different points of view make the process of providing help more efficient. On the other hand, probation officers and social workers represent different institutions which may cause differing interpretations of the same reality. This will ultimately lead to numerous misunderstandings and difficulties on the path to achieving a desirable outcome. The article presented is rooted in the working experiences of a probation officer and a social worker. For this reason the answers to the questions raised by the author are addressed. The article concludes with a brief reflection on ways to enhance cooperation between the two institutions in question.
