Summary/Abstract: The Second Vatican Council valued the families, the lay people, and their apostolate by emphasizing that the lay faithful are the part of the Church that is the community of the People of God, and they participate in the triple mission of Christ, the grace of the common priesthood is granted to them and they have their own proper vocation. On the canvas of this teaching, John Paul ii established the Ponti cal Council for the Laity and the Ponti cal Council for the Family, which Pope Francis transformed into the Dicastery for the Laity, the Family and Life. This department directs the contemporary the apostolate of the laity and families in the Church.
