Summary/Abstract: For years, the international community is making efforts to improve the situation of Roma. In this regard the European Union is on the leading edge. The Member States are currently implementing national strategies targeting the Roma minority. Despite of this, we still have to deal with the discrepancy between the aims of strategies and reality. This article is an attempt to compare the two dimensions and assessment solutions in Austria. The key question is whether the implemented measures contribute to the improvement of the status quo of the study group. One can indicate the most important past successes but also challenges. The analysis of the issue will also identify the main obstacles to the realization of strategic objectives. The analysis concerns the period after 1993 when the Roma were acknowledged by the Austrian authorities as one of six national groups.
