Summary/Abstract: The authoress presents the profile of Mikolaj Gogol, a dramatist, writer, genial thinker, and penetrating moralist. She discusses the most characteristic works of his literary creativeness, which are the evidence that his creative life was – as he affirmed himself – a special mission given him by Providence. Thus Gogol’s craft consisted in uncovering the absurdity of social life, promoting the idea that good matter can be assisted only by truth, stigmatizing evil, and encouraging all honest people to undertake a work of moral renovation. The authoress concludes with presenting the reception of Gogol’s work in Poland, and his significant influence on the Russian natural school (the early phase of Russian realism in literature).
