Summary/Abstract: Aeromonas spp. are natural microbiota of surface waters and soils. Some species can cause diseases of fish, reptiles and mammals, including humans. Effective identification of these bacteria isolated from ponds or drinking water can reduce the incidence of diseases caused by these bacteria. The aim of this study was to compare methods for identification of Aeromonas spp. Aeromonas spp. strains used in this study were isolated from the Lyna River (in Olsztyn) and treated wastewater (Olsztyn Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant). The study was evaluated in two steps. In the first step the occurrence of repetitive ERIC sequences and tetracycline resistance genes was studied. In the second step the almost whole gene 16S rDNA was amplified and sequenced. DNA sequencing had higher discriminatory power and proved to be useful for the genetic analysis of Aeromonas spp. population, whereas of ERIC PCR to differentiate Aeromonas spp. was less.
